The Hercules Cluster of Galaxies

These are galaxies of the Hercules Cluster, an archipelago of island universes a mere 500 million light-years away. Also known as Abell 2151, this cluster is loaded with gas and dust rich, star-forming spiral galaxies but has relatively fewelliptical galaxies, which lack gas and dust and the associated newborn stars. The colors in this remarkably deep composite image clearly show the star forming galaxies with a blue tint and galaxies with older stellar populations with a yellowish cast. The sharp picture spans about 3/4 degree across the cluster center, corresponding to over 6 million light-years at the cluster’s estimated distance. Diffraction spikes around brighter foreground stars in our own Milky Way galaxy are produced by the imaging telescope’s mirror support vanes. In the cosmic vista many galaxies seem to be colliding or merging while others seemdistorted – clear evidence that cluster galaxiescommonly interact. In fact, the Hercules Cluster itself may be seen as the result of ongoing mergers of smaller galaxy clusters and is thought to be similar to young galaxy clusters in the much more distant, early Universe.

Space shuttle

از سال 1981 شاتل های فضایی ناسا از ساحل فلوریدا به مدار زمین پرتاب شده اند.پنج مدارگرد،کلمبیا،چلنجر،دیسکاوری،آتلانتیس و انداور بیش ار 130 مرتبه پرواز کرده اند که همراه خود بیش از 350 نفر را به فضا برده اند و بیش از نیم میلیارد مایل، مسافتی بیشتر از فاصله بین زمین و مشتری، را سفر کرده اند.
شاتل ها اولین وسیله نقلیه فضایی ساخته شده بودند که می توانستند دوباره مورد استفاده قرار گیرند که طراحی آنان توانایی بازگشت به زمین و فرود آمدن را به آنها می داد. و مهمتر از همه اینها برنامه شاتل های فضایی بر دستاورد های بشر افزود و باعث شد ما از دنیایمان بیشتر بدانیم.
همه ی اینها با پرتاب STS-1 در 12 آپریل 1981 آغاز شد،درست 20سال بعد از روزی که فضانورد شوروی ، یوری گاگارین، اولین انسانی شد که به فضا رفت.
آن صبح وقتی که جان یانگ و رابرت کریپن دو فضانورد آمریکایی با کلمبیا به فضا پرتاب شدند اولین بار در تاریخ بود که یک فضاپیمای جدید با خدمه داخل خود به سفر اکتشافی جدید فرستاده می شد.
