What a year! In 2015, we explored the expanse of our solar system and beyond, and the complex processes of our home planet, while also advancing the technologies for our journey to Mars, and new aviation systems as we reached new milestones aboard the International Space Station (@ISS). The work we do, and will continue in 2016, helps the United States maintain its world leadership in space exploration and scientific discovery. We will continue investing in our journey to Mars, returning human spaceflight launches from American soil, fostering groundbreaking technology development, breakthroughs in aeronautics and bringing to every American the awe-inspiring discoveries and images captured by NASA’s missions in our solar system and beyond.

Airglow, Gegenschein and the Milky Way.
Shown here is an usually intense atmospheric airglow stretching over thin clouds. Unlike auroras, the airglow is due to chemiluminescence which is light produced by chemical reactions. The chemical energy is provided by the sun’s extreme ultraviolet radiation. The gegenschein, sunlight reflected by dust along the solar system’s ecliptic plane, is visible, a faint blue cloud just right of the picture’s center. At the right, the Milky Way seems to rise from the mountain where the Magellan telescopes are located. To the left are the OGLE project and du Pont telescopes. The setting of this image is the Las Campanas Observatory in the southern Atacama desert in Chile.
