Three International Space Station (@ISS) crew members are returning to Earth today after 141 days in space. Flight Engineers Kjell Lindgren of NASA; Oleg Kononenko of Roscosmos, the Russian Federal Space Agency; and Kimiya Yui of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) will land in their Soyuz spacecraft at 8:12 a.m. EST in Kazakhstan.

Prior to undocking from the station at 4:49 a.m. EST, Astronaut Kjell Lindgren shared this image of a trio of crewmates inside their Soyuz saying „All loaded up! Farewell to our Exp 45 crewmates and the magnificent International Space Station! Hello Earth!!“ Image credit: NASA

Our Hubble Space telescope found what looks like a cosmic, double-bladed lightsaber just in time for the release of #StarWars. This celestial lightsaber does not lie in a galaxy far, far away, but rather inside our home galaxy, the Milky Way.
In the center of the image, partially obscured by a dark, Jedi-like cloak of dust, a newborn star shoots twin jets out into space as a sort of birth announcement to the universe. This is inside a turbulent birthing ground for new stars known as the Orion B molecular cloud complex, located 1,350 light-years away.

P9 AiR Profile: Madeline Gannon by Pier 9

During her residency at Pier 9, Madeline Gannon developed a project called Quipt – a gesture-based control software that gives industrial robots basic spatial behaviors for interacting closely with people. Wearable markers and a motion capture system let the robot see and respond to you in a shared space. This lets you and the robot safely follow, mirror, and avoid one another as you collaborate together.

Dust lanes seem to swirl around the core of Messier 96 in this colorful, detailed portrait of the center of a beautiful island universe. Of course M96 is a spiral galaxy, and counting the faint arms extending beyond the brighter central region, it spans 100 thousand light-years or so, making it about the size of our own Milky Way. M96, also known as NGC 3368, is known to be about 35 million light-years distant and a dominant member of the Leo I galaxy group. The featured image was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope. The reason for M96’s asymmetry is unclear — it could have arisen from gravitational interactions with other Leo I group galaxies, but the lack of an intra-group diffuse glow seems to indicate few recent interactions. Galaxies far in the background can be found by examining the edges of the picture.
