Space Shuttle and Space Station Photographed Together

 How was this picture taken? Usually, pictures of the shuttle, taken from space, are snapped from the space station. Commonly, pictures of the space station are snapped from the shuttle. How, then, can there be a picture of both the shuttle and the station together, taken from space? The answer is that during the Space Shuttle Endeavour’s last trip to the International Space Station in 2011 May, a supply ship departed the station with astronauts that captured aseries of rare views. The supply ship was the Russian Soyuz TMA-20 which landed in Kazakhstanlater that day. The above spectacular image well captures the relative sizes of the station and docked shuttle. На Земле кремнезём встречается в кварце и других силикатах, но в нижних слоях грунта горы Шарп его содержание достигает 90%, что стало для учёных большой загадкой.
Такую рекордную концентрацию кристаллов диоксида кремния можно объяснить либо выщелачиванием других минералов, либо их попаданием на Марс извне, однако оба эти процесса должны происходить в присутствии воды. Вода с низким показателем кислотности не смогла бы взаимодействовать с кремнезёмом, но привела бы к выносу других минералов из пород, а в нейтральной или щелочной среде произошло бы осаждение диоксида кремния из раствора. Тем временем, в ходе очередного бурения Curiosity внезапно обнаружил в грунте области Бакскин минерал, известный как тридимит. Он крайне редко встречается на Земле и образуется при высокой температуре в магматических или метаморфических породах. Появление на Марсе тридимита может указывать на то, что магма в разные периоды времени могла иметь разный состав. Учёным ещё только предстоит объяснить этот загадочный факт. / Unexpected discoveries of the Mars Curiosity Rover. Continuing the drilling of the soil at the base of mount sharp in the center of Gale crater, the Rover for the last seven months has found more silicon dioxide than in all previous years of studying the red planet. On Earth silica is found in quartz and other silicates, but in the lower layers of the soil of mount sharp, its content reaches 90%, which became for scientists a mystery.

Airglow Ripples over Tibet

Why would the sky look like a giant target? Airglow. Following a giant thunderstorm over Bangladesh in late April, giant circular ripples of glowing air appeared over Tibet, China, aspictured above. The unusual pattern is created byatmospheric gravity waves, waves of alternating air pressure that can grow with height as the air thins, in this case about 90 kilometers up. Unlikeauroras powered by collisions with energetic charged particles and seen at high latitudes, airglow is due to chemiluminescence, the production of light in a chemical reaction. More typically seen near the horizon, airglow keeps the night sky from ever being completely dark.
