Say goodbye to Enceladus: The Cassini spacecraft has finished its final flyby of the mysterious icy moon of Saturn. After receiving streams of data over the weekend, NASA has showcased some of the most beautiful astrophotography taken by the probe. Passing at a distance of 4,999 kilometers (3,106 miles) from the surface of the moon, the final series of images reveals the world’s furrows and ridges in impeccable detail. “This final Enceladus flyby elicits feelings of both sadness and triumph,” said Earl Maize, Cassini project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), in a statement. “While we’re sad to have the close flybys behind us, we’ve placed the capstone on an incredible decade of investigating one of the most intriguing bodies in the Solar System.”

Met the sweetest couple a couple months ago. Their hearing’s seen better days so they had me screaming at them. They’ve been married for 69 years and he’s been scientist for JPL from the age of 21 with a number of missions under his watch. The Halley’s Comet mission went down as his most memorable one to date. #JPL #scientist #nasa #mission by kap3naloa

Tycho’s Nova, or SN 1572 was a type Ia supernova, first observed in November 1572, located about 8000 light-years away from Earth towards the northern constellation of Cassiopeia. The supernova, known as „stella nova“ (or the new star), was named after Tycho Brahe who studied the event extensively. The event lasted about 2 years and could be visible at daytime when it first appeared, with a maximum magnitude of -4, comparable in brightness to Venus. The remnant was discovered in the 1960s, confirming the type Ia classification. A type Ia supernova is the explosion of a white dwarf that accretes mass from a companion star beyond the limit of stability. The Chandra X-ray image shows high X-rays in blue for the blast wave, while low and medium energy X-rays, in red and green, reveal the explosion’s expanding debris.
