Lately, I have found true meaning in Einstein’s statement, “Everything is relative.” A day spent hard at work cramming for a Calculus exam feels like an eternity, while a lazy Sunday spent with friends flashes by in an instant.
Relativity has implications on every object, action, and perspective. I’ve discovered an astonishing link between two very perceptually discrepant matters – atoms and the universe. Generally speaking, an atom is the most basic unit of all living and nonliving matter. Atoms have a universal structure: the center and largest component of an atom, its nucleus, is composed of protons and neutrons. In addition, a cloud of minuscule, negatively charged particles called electrons rapidly spin around the nucleus in orbit formation.

Relative to the nucleus, these electrons are extremely distanced from the atom’s core. To put this into perspective, if an atom’s nucleus, which is 99.9% of its mass, was expanded to the size of a baseball and placed in the center of Fenway Park, the electrons would be found hundreds of feet from the last row of the stadium. Thus, an atom is mostly empty space.

The atom is one of the smallest observed units of matter and life. Scale out to the other end of the observable spectrum, and therein lies the universe. The universe is the largest conceivable scale of existence, and it is composed of planets, stars, constellations and galaxies. Life on earth is locked into rhythm – each day the sun rises and sets due to our solar system’s gravitational dependency on the sun. Earth is suspended in space, locked into a precise orbit with our nearest, largest, and most essential star. Other planets, moons, and asteroids alike, are all spinning and orbiting around larger masses that predestine their fate.

What if Earth is simply an enlarged electron, on a shifted scale, orbiting its respective nucleus (the sun)? What if our entire galaxy is an atom, in some form, to an infinitely larger, more complex life form? Do we humans simply exist on just one of these infinitely large (and small) scale worlds that exhibit the same exact gravitational and rotational spiral patterns? #whatthefuckisgoingon by what_the_fuck_is_going_on_
