O TELESCÓPIO JAMES WEBB TOMA FORMA NO HANGAR DA NASA
A equipe do Telescópio Espacial James Webb trabalha incansavelmente para instalar os 18 segmentos do espelho na estrutura do telescópio.

Dentro da grande sala limpa do Centro de Voo Espacial Goddard da NASA em Greenbelt, Maryland, o nono espelho foi instalado na estrutura do telescópio com um braço robótico. Este feito representa que o andamento do projeto da construção do novo observatório espacial chega a sua metade, pois, devemos nos lembrar que serão 18 segmentos de espelhos instalados no telescópio (já foram instalados nove segmentos). O telescópio tem previsão de lançamento para outubro de 2018.

Nestas imagens da NASA, a equipe de engenharia aparece usando um braço robótico para levantar e abaixar o segmento de forma hexagonal que mede pouco mais de 1,3 metros de largura e pesa aproximadamente 40 quilos. Uma vez montados, os 18 segmentos do espelho primário trabalharão juntos como um grande espelho de 6,5 metros. Espera-se que a instalação seja concluída dentro de algumas semanas.

Este grande espelho, que estará posicionado a quilômetros da Terra e equipado com quatro instrumentos especializados, irá permitir que este telescópio estude o nascimento e evolução das galáxias e a formação de estrelas e planetas.

The moon passed between Nasa’s Deep Space Climate Observatory and the Earth, allowing the satellite to capture this rare image of the moon’s far side in full sunlight. We normally don’t see this side of the moon. As the moon is tidally locked to the earth and doesn’t rotate, we only ever see the one face from the earth. Awesome shot!

The Fox Fur Nebula.

This interstellar canine is formed of cosmic dust and gas interacting with the energetic light and winds from hot young stars. The shape, visual texture, and color, combine to give the region the popular name Fox Fur Nebula. The characteristic blue glow on the left is dust reflecting light from the bright star S Mon, the bright star just below the top edge of the featured image. Textured red and black areas are a combination of the cosmic dust and reddish emission from ionized hydrogen gas. S Mon is part of a young open cluster of stars, NGC 2264, located about 2,500 light years away toward the constellation of the Unicorn (Monoceros). Image Credit & Copyright: John Vermette
