If a black hole can have a mass similar to that of the sun, how can it exert a gravitational pull so strong that not even light can escape?
You can certainly have black hole with the same mass as the sun, in fact imagine you have the sun and copy of the sun they are absolutely the same. To turn this copy of the sun in to a black hole what to do squeeze it down to five Km cross then this squeezed sun tured to block hole. The fact this size of black hole is really small comparing to sun allows you to experience more powerful gravitational pull. If you’re in a spaceship you can go to the surface of the sun but you cannot go any further, and therefore you always certain distance from the center; pretty far actually for the sun. For a black hole same mass of the sun you can get much much closer to the center because the object squeezed down and the close you get the stronger gravitational pull, and if you get too close the gravitational pull so strong that you cannot get away..
