Comet Catalina’s Tails.
As 2016 begins, Comet Catalina now sweeps through Earth’s predawn skies near the bright Arcturus, alpha star of Bootes. This image, from December 21, shows the beautiful tails of Catalina across a field as wide as 10 moons. The distant galaxies and faint stars in the background are in the constellation Virgo. Catalina’s tail is spread out due to solar wind. On January 17, this visitor from the Oort Cloud will make it’s closest approach to Earth. It will be seen near the bright stars along the handle of the Big Dipper.
