Geminid meteor shower over Dashanbao Wetlands.
The night sky is shared with bright Jupiter to the right, the Orion constellation to the center right and the faint central band of the Milky Way galaxy. The Gemini constellation, the apparent source of the meteor streaks, is just above the top of the frame. As Earth moved into the cosmic dust of comet Phaethon 3200, the meteors enter the atmosphere at a speed of about 22,000 meters per second. This particular location is the Dashanbao Wetlands in central China.

Geminid meteors over Xinglong Observatory. Comet 3200 Phaethon is a bit of mystery because it appears mostly dormant but continues to produce one of the most dense and active meteor showers. Shown here, the meteors seem to flow from one particular part of the sky, the constellation of Gemini. Also,…

Meteors and the Milky Way over Mt. Rainier. Shown here is the Perseids meteor shower in Washington, USA. The green tint of the meteors is due to small amounts of magnesium being knocked off the meteor by Earth's atmosphere. Also, the Milky Way is seen straight up behind the mountain.…
