Thanks to @universe.earth.photos – Authorities in the scientific community have since identified the object as a piece of an asteroid that likely weighed at least 150 pounds as it streaked 50 miles above McDonough, Ga.
It entered the atmosphere at approximately 29,000 mph.
NASA’s cameras tracked the object to an altitude of 17 miles above the town of Locust Grove where it slowed to a speed of 9,000 miles per hour.
That’s when the fireball stopped producing light by ablation – or brightly burning up.
Now the hunt is on by amateur meteorite hunters in the area of Locust Grove and counties adjacent to Henry County where NASA believes potential chucks may have made landfall.
NASA scientists plan to conduct a more thorough analysis of the meteor on Friday.

Hyperion. Saturn's moon Hyperion is one of the most unique objects in space. It's irregular shape, chaotic rotation and sponge-like appearance sets it a part from the other moons. It's shape is probably due to a collision with another object. It was the first non-round moon discovered. Image Credit: NASA…

A year on the sun. The sun shows emissions from highly ionized iron atoms in the solar corona at a temperature of about 1 million degrees Fahrenheit. Also, the solar active regions are laced with loops and arcs along magnetic field lines. These regions are known as dark spots. Image…

Layered rocks near Mount Sharp on Mars. The leading hypothesis as to why these rocks are layered is an ancient Martian lake that kept evaporating and refilling for 10 million years but remained dry and empty for billions of years. This image was captured by the Curiosity rover last November.…
