Researchers at the University of Liverpool have just figured out a new way to predict volcanic eruptions. Using a jelly-filled tank and colored water to represent #magma (pictured here), they noticed a drop in pressure when magma spread horizontally along the bottom of the tank. That drop in pressure could drive the release of dissolved gases that cause the magma to erupt. “A pressure drop can drive the release of dissolved gases, potentially causing the magma to explode and erupt,” said team member Prof. Sandy Cruden.
