The Tharsis region on #Mars has three shield volcanoes called Arsia Mons, Pavonis Mons & Ascraeus Mons. The three volcanoes are collectively called as ‘Tharsis Montes’. With countless generations of lava flow and ashes, these volcanoes are believed to be placing immense stresses on the planet’s lithosphere. ‚Arsia Mons‘ is 30 times the volume of Mauna Loa in Hawaii, the largest volcano on the Earth. ‚Pavonis Mons‘ is the smallest of the Tharsis Montes volcanoes. It was discovered by Mariner 9 spacecraft in 1971. ‚Ascraeus Mons‘ is the tallest of the three Tharsis Montes’ volcanoes & is the second highest mountain on Mars, with a summit elevation of 18.1 km.
